The Spike Lives heritage research project is chronicling the lives of the inmates, staff and guardians of the Guildford Union workhouse in the 1881 census, and some of the workers at Eashing Paper Mill ended up there. The fascinating stories include one of a girl who died after her clothes caught fire while her mother was working at the mill.
