Sugarbaker Farm

Sugarbaker Farm, Attleford Lane

Sugarbaker Farm

A man called Garthwaite owned lots of land in and around Shackleford in the 18th century, including Hall Place (now Aldro) and possibly this land too. He also owned property in Lime Street in the City of London but more importantly a sugar plantation of 300 acres in Jamaica. Arguably Shackleford was built on the slave trade!

Since a sugar-baker was the owner of a sugar house, a factory for the refining of raw sugar, it’s just possible that here is the connection. Did one of his sugar-bakers own the land or even the first house built there?

Here’s how the house was advertised in 1997
